Unused greenhouses could grow diatoms: Aichi tests transparent culture bags
Announcement: October 26. A media demonstration is planned for November 24. The annual production figure is a target, not an achieved result.
IllustrationAichi introduced cultivation research on October 26 using transparent bags and acidic medium. Producing at least 100 kilograms per greenhouse each year is a future target, not a recorded annual yield.

Bags and a selective growth environment
A Toyohashi University of Technology-led group is studying acid-tolerant Pinnularia diatoms. Transparent plastic bags admit sunlight; pumped air mixes the culture. Strong acidity is intended to reduce interference from other microorganisms.
Turning existing space into sustained production
Equipment could give unused agricultural greenhouses a new purpose. Seasonal changes in temperature and sunlight mean operating conditions still need validation. Food, feed and other applications include future expectations. The focus is the cultivation method and reuse of facilities, rather than an invitation to a short event or a guarantee of income.
