Combining radar observations and fire science
Japan's National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management signed separate agreements with the two small-SAR satellite operators. Radar observations offer a way to examine surfaces at night and under cloud conditions that challenge optical observation, combined here with fire-science expertise.
Testing what changes can be detected
Researchers will compare past fire surveys with satellite data and investigate changes to surfaces and structures. Different satellite systems may help identify affected areas for early response and recovery. No completed operational system or detection-accuracy result has been announced; this work tests what can be learned under which conditions.
