Several locations record October 22 as their first snow day
JMA listed Wakkanai, Asahikawa, Kitamiesashi and Kutchan. Compared with average dates, Wakkanai and Asahikawa were three days later, Kitamiesashi six days earlier and Kutchan two days later. This does not mean the whole island experienced the same snowfall.
First snow does not mean snow has begun accumulating
Weathernews explained that sleet also counts as first snow. JMA separately records first snow and the first day with daily maximum snow depth of at least one centimeter. The announcement does not imply widespread snow cover; check temperatures, road surfaces and current mountain-pass information.
