Monitoring moves from Level 1 to Level 2
The ministry said Korean authorities announced H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza detection on October 20 in wild-bird droppings collected at Suncheon Bay on October 12. Given the nearby-country detection and migration season, Japan is moving from normal Level 1 to enhanced-monitoring Level 2 nationwide.
Distinguish monitoring from a domestic case
The ministry said no Japanese wild-bird cases had been confirmed since May 22 at the time of its October 21 announcement. Raising monitoring does not establish a new domestic case. It asks people finding dead or weakened wild birds not to touch them and to contact local authorities.
