A Japan Press Research Institute survey found 49.8% subscribed to a monthly newspaper, down 0.3 percentage points and below half for the first time since the survey began in fiscal 2008, Jiji reported October 11.
Conducted July 17–August 16, it targeted 5,000 adults nationwide and received 2,676 responses. It also examined television and internet news use.
